Member of the BC Public Service Since: 1997
Hi, my name is Dave Sabyan and I'm a Senior Vehicle Inspector for the Ministry of Transport and I've done this job since 1998. My job, basically, is to perform inspections on all types of vehicles; those are both random inspections and scheduled inspections. In my everyday work, I look at the positive impact that it improves the roads in B.C. by virtue of the fact that we're taking unsafe vehicles off the road, we're taking drivers that don't have a driver's license or they're a prohib driver off the road and we're dealing with the public that sees us as a safety check and that's in the commercial vehicles as well. They all like to see us out there, those drivers that are safe and taking good care of their vehicles. We always get compliments from them; they're really glad to see us out their doing our job. The education background that I have is very, very diverse. I am a Journeyman Licensed Automotive Mechanic, I have my Red Seal for my inter-provincial license. I worked for my father at a General Motors dealership for 18 years and had terrific training as a General Motors technician. I worked for B.C. Ambulance for 10 years as a part-time EMA 1 and I worked for ICBC for two and a half years as a material damage estimator.
What I like about the BC Public Service and my job is I have a good, flexible work schedule, it's accommodating for me and my employer, there are terrific benefits as far as dental and medical for both myself and my family and there's tremendous opportunity for on-going training. All you have to do is basically ask for it, and it's there.
