Audit Analyst

Employee Name:
Kevin Murphy
Kevin - Audit Analyst
Title:
Audit Analyst
Ministry:
Ministry of Finance
Background:

Education: Bachelor of Commerce (UVIC); Current Certified General Accountant student (Camosun College)
Member of the BC Public Service Since: 1999

My Role

I am an Audit Analyst for the Income Taxation Branch. My main job is reviewing and logging tax returns for accuracy, processing refunds, answering questions and completing revenue reconciliations.

Career Path:

I went to university and took co-op commerce and then worked for four co-op semesters - two of them with BC Buildings Corporation as an Accounting Assistant. The co-op positions gave me experience I probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise. The public practice accounting gave me a background in financial work. My experience in the Income Taxation Branch helped me develop my analytical skills and will prepare me for audit and related positions as I progress in my CGA program.

What I Like Best:

I like the flexible working arrangements (flexible work times and flex days), the security and the fact that there are lots of opportunities to move around to different areas. I like analytical work and it's a good office environment; the people are really easy to deal with and morale is good. Overall, it was a good fit for what I wanted to do.

Ideas At Work:

I assist in collecting revenue for the province which is used for services to the public such as health, social services and education. All of my work is behind the scenes and I find my supervisors are very receptive when I make any suggestions.

Advice:

I recommend enrolling in an accounting program in a college or university that offers a co-op option, as it offers a chance for valuable work experience. Also, pursue temporary/auxiliary opportunities as well as permanent ones, as the temporary jobs can often lead to permanent ones. To do this job, you have to be detail-oriented and like problem solving. There are plenty of opportunities to show initiative and to look more into accounts.
