Employee Profile Photo
Title:
Senior Economist
Ministry:
Ministry of Health Services
Background:

Education: Ph.D in Agricultural Economics (Purdue University); Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management (National Agricultural University of Ukraine)
Member of the BC Public Service Since: 2006

My Role

I am a Senior Economist working for the Divisional Strategic Implementation and Analysis Branch, Medical Services Division for the Ministry of Health. I support physician negotiations; when there is a negotiation between a physician and a ministry, I assess and provide data support and economic support. I also provide general economic support for the ministry, do cost-benefit analysis and financial calculations and finalize numbers. There are so many sides to it; there are lots of varying issues.

Career Path:

I was a Research Assistant Professor for the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics in Ukraine. I immigrated to Canada and this opportunity came up and I decided to take it. My previous position and prior economics education equipped me with the necessary knowledge to perform my current job. I'm an applied economist by trade and it was a very suitable position for me as I wanted to work in Health Economics.

What I Like Best:

I was fortunate to get this opportunity; it allows me to do lots of exciting things and to get hands-on experience with health economic issues. I get feedback from my work right away. The best part is the great people with whom I have a privilege to work. I get to work with real numbers and real people.

Ideas At Work:

I am proud to be a part of the team that strives to make sure that British Columbians receive the best possible medical care in return for their tax and medical service plan contributions.

Advice:

I would advise anyone wanting to get in to this field to get some Economics or Applied Economics education. A graduate degree would definitely be a plus; however, economics work experience is also an invaluable part of job qualifications. If you're inquisitive, interested in economics and like solving applied problems in a short time-span you will enjoy this job. You'll be working with real applied issues and always have lots of things to do.
