Student Resume Tips

It all starts here

Congratulations. You’ve worked hard developing your career through post-secondary education and are now ready to explore opportunities in which to utilize your skills. The right resume profile can help you to best meet your career goals and to get on the road to a rewarding future with the BC Public Service.

Your resume profile is a summary of your skills, accomplishments and experience that pertain to the career objective you are pursuing. Think of it as your own personal advertisement. This is your opportunity to “sell” your unique skills and experience to potential employers and compel them to learn more about you.

You are more experienced than you may think

Don’t be discouraged if you lack practical on-the-job experience in your field. Hiring managers look at more than just your employment history. Take the following points into consideration when you are compiling your resume profile and you’ll be surprised at just how valuable your skill set is:

  • Describe any job-related research projects you have worked on
  • Include the details of any co-op placements you have completed
  • List any awards you have received
  • Include any relevant experience you have as a volunteer
  • Include any relevant summer jobs you have had
  • Talk about your related extra-curricular activities
  • Feel free to bring in a portfolio of project work that is related to the position

Be focused

When applying to an employment opportunity, tailor-make your resume profile to suit the particular position. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the ministry to which you are applying. Visit their ministry website to obtain information on their objectives and mandates. This will show the hiring manager that you have a genuine interest in their position and that you are well-prepared.

Thank you for choosing the BC Public Service. We look forward to being part of your future.
